Diakonikon / Melchizedek
The Diakonikon is the area of the Holy Altar where the “holy things” are kept that will be used in the Divine Services. We see the word “diakonia,” the Greek word for service/ministry present in the name of the Diakonikon. Melchizedek is the mysterious person who appears in the Book of Genesis as the priest who offers bread and wine and then disappears from Holy Scripture. Christ is named as a “priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek” as foreshadowed in Holy Scripture. As Melchizedek is an image of servitude and priesthood in the Old Testament, we place his icon in that place in the Holy Altar where the holy items are contained for the priestly service.
